Leaves are transparent blocks that generate as part of trees and are sources of their respective saplings. They dissipate over time when not attached to logs, but persist when placed by players. Falling leaf particles occasionally drop from leaves.

Natural generation

Each type of leaves occurs naturally on their respective type of trees throughout the Overworld. In addition to this:

Oak

Oak leaves generate as part of:

Spruce

Spruce leaves generate as part of abandoned camps in old growth pine taigas, old growth spruce taigas, snowy taigas, taigas and windswept forests.

Dark Oak

Dark oak leaves generate as part of woodland mansions.

Birch

Birch leaves generate as part of abandoned camps in birch forests, flower forests and forests.

Jungle

Jungle leaves generate as part of abandoned camps in bamboo jungles.

Acacia

Acacia leaves generate as part of abandoned camps in savannas.

Mangrove

Mangrove leaves generate as part of trial chambers.

Cherry

Cherry leaves generate as part of abandoned camps in cherry groves.

Pale Oak

Pale oak leaves generate as part of abandoned camps in pale gardens.

Poplar

Poplar leaves generate as part of abandoned camps in dappled forests.

Post-generation

Leaves generate as part of trees grown from saplings, azaleas, or mangrove propagules.

Usage

Leaves from trees spontaneously decay (disappear) when they receive a block tick if they are not connected to any log or wood blocks, stripped or otherwise, either directly or via other leaf blocks, with a maximum distance of 6 blocks‌[Java Edition only] or 4 blocks‌[Bedrock Edition only]. In Java Edition, this is determined using the prevents_nearby_leaf_decay block tag, whereas in Bedrock Edition, the list of blocks is hardcoded. The distance is taxicab distance, but can cross corners. Leaves placed by players never decay. Bamboo does not count as a log for this purpose.

Leaves that decay have the same drop chances as when broken by players, yielding saplings 5% (1⁄20) of the time, sticks 2% of the time, and otherwise nothing. Jungle leaves drop saplings 2.5% (1⁄40) of the time. Oak and dark oak leaves also have a separate but additional 0.5% (1⁄200) chance of dropping an apple, making it extremely rare but possible for a single leaf to drop a sapling, two sticks and an apple at the same time. Leaves that are burned do not yield saplings or apples.

Leaves are always transparent to light but cannot be seen through when the graphics is set to "Fast" or fancy leaves are turned off; the transparent regions are instead dark green. Leaves that are entirely surrounded by full blocks also render opaque in Bedrock Edition. They diffuse sky light, causing the shadows they cast under trees.

Leaf blocks can be waterlogged although they are full blocks. Water does not spread out‌[Java Edition only], and waterlogged leaves follow the same rules as any other waterlogged block. When concrete powder is placed on any side of the waterlogged leaves it turns into concrete, and the leaf block remains waterlogged.

Although leaves behave as solid blocks by preventing entities from moving through them, they also behave as non-solid, in that leaves do not prevent chests from opening.

Applying bone meal to mangrove leaves with a space beneath produces a hanging mangrove propagule with age=0.

Redstone component

This feature is exclusive to Java Edition.

The state of a leaves block—including a player-placed block—changes after 1 game tick (half a redstone tick) when the distance to the nearest log or wood block changes, up to 6 blocks of leaves away. Observers facing away from the leaves detect this change and transmit a redstone signal in the same game tick, making leaves useful for redstone signal transmission.

Piston interactivity

Leaves are destroyed when pushed by pistons. They do not stick to sticky pistons, slime blocks, or honey blocks.

Composting

Most types of leaves have a 30% chance of increasing the compost level in a composter by 1. A stack of leaves yields an average of 3.05 bone meal. The exception are flowering azalea leaves, which have a 50% chance of increasing the compost level (a stack of those yields 4.92 pieces of bone meal on average).

Bees

Flowering azaleas leaves and cherry leaves function like any other flowers in their interaction and uses with bees.

Snowy leaves

This feature is exclusive to Bedrock Edition.
Trees in a snowy biome during snowfall in Bedrock Edition

In any biome with a base temperature of below 0.15, all biome-tinted leaves gradually fade to white once snowfall begins, giving them a frosted appearance for the storm's duration. During transition, the white color is blended with the regular color in eight steps. After snowfall ends, leaves gradually fade back to their normal coloration.

This does not affect leaves in biomes with a higher base temperature, even at altitudes that allow snowfall. Cherry, azalea, flowering azalea, pale oak, and poplar leaves are not affected as their colors are based on the texture instead of colormaps.[2][3] The change is entirely invisible to the client if the graphics mode is set to Simple, though it still takes place, and leaves are the correct color phase for the time if the option is re-enabled.

Particles

All types of leaves (except spruce)‌[JE only] have their own falling leaves particle which are produced underneath the leaf block, where they slowly fall to the ground.

Leaf particles from biome-tinted leaves have the same color as the leaves they're falling from, which can change with the biome or during snowfall.‌[BE only] Cherry, pale oak, and all poplar leaves have pre-colored textures, azalea leaves use a hard-coded color.

Ambient sounds

Poplar leaves occasionally emit ambient sounds when they are surrounded by a non-stripped log of any kind and 3 poplar leaves of the same color in all 4 horizontal directions.

The ambient sounds emitted can be heard from up to 12 blocks.

Java Edition

Java Edition Classic
0.0.14a Added leaves.
The bottom texture of leaves is mirrored vertically.
0.0.15a (Multiplayer Test 1) The texture of leaves has been changed.
0.0.19a Leaves can now be selected on the hotbar, rather than strictly requiring a number key as placeable blocks did previously.
0.24_SURVIVAL_TEST Leaves now drop saplings.
Java Edition Indev
0.3120091223-1459 Leaves now produce shadows.
20100107-1947 Leaves texture is now solid.
20100218-0011 Leaves now decay.
Java Edition Infdev
20100227-1414 Leaves no longer decay.

20100615 Leaves now decay again.
20100616-1808 Leaves now use an opaque texture and act like opaque solid blocks when the graphics setting is set to "Fast".
Blocks like torches, doors and ladders can now be placed on leaves with fast graphics.
Java Edition Alpha
v1.0.6 Leaves no longer decay.
Leaves now have a 1⁄20 chance of dropping a sapling instead of 1⁄10.
v1.0.6_01 Leaves now decay again when not connected to the ground or to a tree trunk.
v1.2.0preview With the addition of biomes, the color of leaves have been changed.
Leaves no longer decay.
v1.2.1 Leaf breaking particle colors now reflect the biome, instead of the grayscale texture.
v1.2.3 Leaf decay has been re-introduced.
v1.2.3_01 Leaf decay is now disabled, due to an infinite loop in the code.
Java Edition Beta
1.0 Leaf decay has been re-introduced with the new behavior.
1.1 Leaf decay has been rewritten, once again.
1.2 Added spruce and birch leaves, which are colored
 #619961
and
 #80a755
respectively, and do not vary across biomes.
Spruce and birch leaves that decay, or are destroyed, drop oak saplings.
1.5 Spruce and birch leaves now drop their respective saplings.
1.6Test Build 3 Leaves are no longer considered solid with Fast graphics, meaning that certain blocks can no longer be placed on leaves and mobs cannot spawn on top of them.
1.7 Added shears, which collect leaves. Before, leaves could be obtained only via inventory editing.
Leaves no longer appear gray (blank and uncolored, default texture before the application of biome coloration) in the inventory.
1.8Pre-release Leaves placed by the player or an enderman no longer decay like normal leaves do.
Java Edition
1.0.0Beta 1.9 Prerelease 4 The Silk Touch enchantment can now be used to collect leaves.
Beta 1.9 Prerelease 6 Silk Touch now preserves the data value of broken leaves rather than always dropping oak. This now includes non-species metadata, allowing for the collection of invalid data value leaves as an item.
Spruce and birch leaves are now available directly in the creative inventory.
1.111w48a Oak leaves now have a 1⁄200 chance of dropping an apple.
1.2.112w03a Added jungle leaves.
Oak leaves now generate in jungle bushes.
1.3.112w18a Jungle leaves now have a small chance of dropping cocoa beans.
Each type of leaves now has a unique name.
12w19a Jungle leaves no longer drop cocoa beans.
12w22a Water now slowly drips through leaves during rain.
1.4.612w49a Leaves now always drop the correct data values when collected via Silk Touch, making invalid data value leaves unobtainable in survival from this point onwards.
1.7.213w43a Added acacia and dark oak leaves, which use separate but identical textures to oak leaves.
1.7 Acacia and dark oak leaves now drop acacia and dark oak saplings, rather than oak and spruce saplings.[4]
1.814w25a Jungle leaves now use the texture of oak leaves.[5] This is an issue with the model, as it points to the exact same texture file as oak leaves do, making the jungle leaves texture file unused in this version.
Leaves now render differently with the "Fast" graphics setting.
Leaves no longer have distinct texture files for fast and fancy graphics.
14w25b Jungle leaves now use their own texture again.[5]
Leaves now render differently in the "Fast" graphics setting - all transparent pixels are rendered fully opaque, causing them to appear black with the default textures.[6]
1.1116w39a Dark oak leaves now generate in woodland mansions.
1.1318w22a Naturally-generated leaves now survive at a distance of up to 6 blocks from logs, instead of 4.
1.1418w43a Leaves now have a small chance to drop sticks when decaying.
The textures of all leaves have changed. This also results in birch, acacia and dark oak leaves having visually distinct textures from oak leaves.
18w48a Oak leaves now generate at some meeting points in plains villages.
19w03a Placing leaves into the brand-new composter has a 10% chance of raising the compost level by 1.

Pale oak leaves now emit a falling leaf particle effect.
1.21.525w02a Leaves can now be smelted into leaf litter.
All leaves now emit falling leaf particles, not just cherry and pale oak.
Pale oak leaves now have an updated map color.
1.21.1125w41a The transparency of leaves is now controlled by the "See-Through Leaves" setting.
pre1 Opaque leaves render differently due to a bug.[10]
pre2 The appearance of opaque leaves has been changed. When the "See-Through Leaves" setting is disabled, all the transparent pixels are set to the darkest opaque color, further darkened by 25%.
26.3snap1 Added red, orange, and yellow poplar leaves.
Unlike other leaves, poplar leaves don't use the dark_cutout mipmap strategy, resulting in an incorrect appearance when the "See-Through Leaves" setting is turned off.
Spruce leaves no longer emit falling leaf particles.
Oak, birch, jungle, cherry, and poplar leaves now generate as part of abandoned camps.

v0.3.0 Oak leaves now drop their item form when broken with shears.
Survival players no longer start out with an infinite amount of oak leaves in the inventory.
Breaking spruce or birch leaves with shears would drop strange leaves items that had a durability bar, and would stack to 1, sometimes appearing as infinity. Spruce leaves used the crafting table side texture on all sides on some devices.[11]
The texture of inventory icon for oak leaves has been changed.
v0.3.2 The tints of oak, spruce, and birch leaves, have been changed to
 #48b518
,

.
Leaves pre-dating this update include multiple types of leaves, as the data indicating leaf type was previously used for decay calculations.
Java Edition
1.2.112w03a Oak trees pre-dating Beta 1.2 can include some jungle leaves as the data indicating leaf type had previously been used for decay calculations.
Leaves with data value 3, 7, 11, 15 replaced with jungle leaves.

Trivia

  • Occasionally, leaves grow through other blocks, acting as though they are still connected to the tree. They may also completely replace blocks they try to grow into.
  • Some trees seem to occasionally drop apples or saplings without being destroyed due to creation of leaf blocks not supported by logs.
