    How anvil costs work

Every anvil operation has a target on the left (your item, or a book) and a sacrifice on the right (an enchanted book). The level cost of one step is:

cost = enchantment cost of the sacrifice + prior work penalty of both + 1 if you rename

    Enchantment cost

Each enchantment on the sacrifice costs level × multiplier. Books use a lower multiplier than items: Protection IV from a book costs 4 levels, Thorns III costs 12 (multiplier 4). That is why the calculator only ever sacrifices books, never the item.

    Prior work penalty

Every item and book remembers how often it went through an anvil. The penalty doubles with each use, and the result of a step gets the higher counter of the two plus one:

    Anvil uses0123456
    Penalty (levels)0137153163

    "Too Expensive!"

In survival mode an anvil refuses any single step of 40 levels or more (creative mode has no limit). Because the penalty grows so fast, the order matters: merging books in pairs keeps every counter low, while adding books one by one to the item makes the last steps very expensive.

    Tips for cheap enchanting

    1. Pair the books first. Merge books two by two and apply the combined books, so the item goes through the anvil as rarely as possible.
    2. Expensive enchantments early. Thorns, Soul Speed, Swift Sneak or Silk Touch cost 4 per level on a book; apply them while the penalties are still 0.
    3. Rename in the first step. It only adds 1 level there instead of a whole extra anvil use later.
    4. Use a fresh item. An item that already went through the anvil several times may never get a full set in survival. Enchant a new one and repair it with Mending.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the best order to combine enchanted books?
Combine books in pairs first and then merge the pairs, so that the item and every book go through the anvil as few times as possible: the prior work penalty doubles with every use. Apply expensive enchantments (high level × high multiplier) early, while the penalty is still low. The calculator tries every possible order and shows the cheapest one.
Why does the anvil say "Too Expensive!"?
In survival mode an anvil refuses any single operation that costs 40 levels or more. Costs grow with every anvil use because of the prior work penalty (1, 3, 7, 15, 31 … levels). With the survival limit switched on, the calculator only suggests orders in which every step costs 39 levels or less.
What is the prior work penalty?
Every item or book that went through an anvil gets a prior work counter. Its penalty is 2^n − 1 levels: 0, 1, 3, 7, 15, 31 after 0 to 5 uses. When you combine two things, both penalties are added to the cost, and the result gets the higher counter plus one.
Is it cheaper to put books on books first?
Usually, yes. Merging two books first and then applying the combined book keeps the item's counter low. The cheapest order mixes both; the calculator finds it exactly for up to 12 books.
Does renaming an item cost extra?
Renaming adds 1 level to the step in which you do it. Rename in the first step, while the item is fresh, instead of in a separate anvil use with its own penalty.
Are anvil costs different in Bedrock Edition?
The cost formula, the prior work penalty and the 39-level limit are the same. In Bedrock Edition an Impaling book is cheaper (×1 instead of ×2), Sweeping Edge does not exist and Silk Touch also works on shears. Switch the edition in step 3.
