How to make a Minecraft skin

  1. Pick a start. Begin with Miney, the blank template, your own PNG or the skin of any Java Edition player.
  2. Choose colors and a tool. Pick a color from the palette or the color field, then use the pencil, bucket, line or rectangle. The shade tool makes pixels a little darker or lighter.
  3. Paint both layers. Paint the base layer first, then switch to the second layer for hair, hats and clothes. Mirror mode paints the left and right arm or leg at the same time.
  4. Check it in 3D. Turn the figure, let it walk and hide body parts to reach every side. Switch between classic and slim arms to see which fits.
  5. Download and upload. Click Download PNG and upload the file in the Minecraft Launcher (Java) or the Dressing Room (Bedrock).

Every body part is a box that is unfolded onto the texture: the top and bottom in the first row, then right side, front, left side and back next to each other. "Right" always means the player's right, which is on the left when you look at the front. Old 64 × 32 skins only have the upper half; the game copies the right arm and leg to the left side.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a Minecraft skin?
Start from Miney or the blank template, pick a color and paint on the texture map. The 3D figure next to it updates while you paint, so you always see where a pixel ends up. Use the second layer for hair, hats, jackets and sleeves, then click Download PNG.
How do I put the skin into Minecraft?
Java Edition: open the Minecraft Launcher, go to Skins, click New skin, browse to your PNG, choose Classic or Slim arms and click Save & Use. You can also upload it in your profile on minecraft.net. Bedrock Edition: open the Dressing Room, choose Classic Skins, then Import and Choose New Skin, and select the PNG.
What is the difference between classic and slim arms?
Classic arms (the Steve model) are 4 pixels wide, slim arms (the Alex model) are 3 pixels wide. Everything else on the texture is the same. When you switch the model, the editor converts both arms by removing or repeating the inner column, so your design stays in place.
What is the second layer of a skin?
Every body part has an outer layer that sits slightly above the base layer: the hat, the jacket, both sleeves and both pants legs. It can be partly transparent, so it is used for hair, hoods, glasses and 3D details. Players can switch each part of it off in Minecraft under Options, Skin Customization.
Can I edit my current skin?
Yes. Type your Minecraft: Java Edition name and click Load skin; the editor takes your skin from the MineUniverse player database. You can also open a PNG from your device, or click Edit on any skin page in our skin gallery.
What size is a Minecraft skin?
A skin is a 64 × 64 pixel PNG image. Old skins from before Minecraft 1.8 are 64 × 32; the editor converts them automatically and copies the right arm and leg to the left side, just like the game does. HD skins larger than 64 × 64 do not work in the regular game.
Why are parts of my skin black in the game?
Only the second layer can be see-through. Transparent pixels on the base layer are shown in black (or another solid color) by Minecraft. The editor counts them when you download, so you can fill them in before you upload the skin.
