The loom's slots are, from left to right: banner, dye, pattern item. Each step uses up one dye; pattern items stay in the loom.

How to make a custom banner in Minecraft

      1. Craft a banner. Put 6 wool of one colour in the top two rows of a crafting table and a stick in the bottom middle. The wool colour becomes the base colour of the banner.
      2. Craft a loom. Place 2 string above 2 planks of any wood. The loom is where every pattern is added.
      3. Collect the dyes and pattern items. Every layer uses up one dye of its colour. Ten patterns, such as Creeper Charge or Globe, also need their banner pattern item, which is not used up.
      4. Add the layers from bottom to top. Put the banner, the dye and, if needed, the pattern item into the loom, pick the pattern and take the banner out. Repeat for every layer in the order of the loom steps above. In survival a banner holds up to 6 layers.
      5. Copy it or paint a shield. Craft the finished banner with a blank banner of the same base colour to get a copy (only the blank banner is used up), or with a shield to paint the shield (the banner is used up).

      Tips for great banner designs

      • Order matters. Every layer covers the layers below it, so start with large shapes such as halves, gradients or diagonals and finish with small charges and borders.
      • Hide parts on purpose. Many clever designs (letters, arrows, checkerboards) paint a shape and then cover part of it again with the base colour.
      • Contrast wins. Dark patterns on light bases and light patterns on dark bases read best from far away and on maps.
      • Check the shield. Shields have half the resolution of banners, so thin lines and small details can change; the shield preview shows the result.
      • Mind the copies. A banner with more than 6 layers only exists through commands and cannot be copied in a crafting grid.

      Frequently asked questions

How many patterns can a banner have?
In survival a banner holds up to 6 pattern layers; the loom refuses a seventh. In Java Edition, banners from /give or /setblock can carry more layers and the game draws up to 16 of them. Switch the designer to Commands mode to use up to 16 layers. Bedrock Edition shows at most 6 layers.
Which banner patterns need a banner pattern item?
Field Masoned, Bordure Indented, Flower Charge, Creeper Charge, Skull Charge, Thing, Globe, Snout, Flow and Guster. Put the item into the third slot of the loom; it is not used up, so one item is enough for any number of banners. Field Masoned and Bordure Indented need their item since Java 1.21.2.
How do I put a banner design on a shield?
Put a shield without patterns and the finished banner into a crafting grid. The shield takes the banner's design and base colour and the banner is used up. Shields have a lower resolution than banners, so small details look a little different; the shield preview shows exactly how.
How do I copy a banner?
Put the patterned banner and a blank banner of the same base colour into a crafting grid. You get the copy and keep the original. Banners with more than 6 layers from commands cannot be copied.
How do I remove a layer from a banner?
Use the banner on a cauldron with water. This washes off the top layer (the last one you added) and lowers the water level by one step. Repeat to remove more layers.
Why does my /give command not work?
The item format changed in Java 1.20.5: newer versions use the banner_patterns component, older versions the BlockEntityTag NBT tag, so choose your version in the /give tab. The chat accepts only 256 characters; paste longer commands into a command block. Bedrock Edition cannot give banners with patterns, so use the loom steps there.
