An abandoned camp is a small structure consisting of a campsite and wool tent with chests, barrels, and copper chests that generates in various Overworld surface biomes. Its appearance can be varied, such as being covered in leaves or featuring a crop farm nearby. The loot inside the chests can have explorer maps for various structures, such as other abandoned camps, trial chambers, and ancient cities.

Description

The locations of copper chests not visible from the surface[note 1]

Abandoned camps can generate in eighteen surface biomes in the Overworld, featuring tents made of white wool stairs with an array of chests, barrels, straw beds, cushions, and other utility blocks inside. Rarely, an oxidized copper chest can be found with more valuable loot than the standard containers, often being hidden under other blocks.

The floor of the tent and surrounding ground are composed of dirt, gravel, and path blocks, and nearby the tent is an unlit campfire along with a chest or a barrel. Cobwebs and leaves sometimes replace the wool stairs that make up the tent, giving it an abandoned appearance. Other features can sometimes generate around the tent, such as a tree or small crop farm. The fences supporting the tent differ depending on the biome. For example, a tent that generates in a pale garden uses pale oak fences.

Generation

Abandoned camps generate in the following biomes:

The generation of abandoned camps follows a grid of 37×37 chunk regions centered on the world origin. Each region contains a single generation attempt at a random location within the region; if the selected location is not within a valid biome, the camp does not generate.

Assuming invalid biomes do not cancel generation, abandoned camps are spaced a minimum of 8 chunks and a maximum of 60 chunks apart. The average distance between two neighboring camps is therefore 34 chunks.

Abandoned camps are one of the only structures that generate on the same locations in Java Edition and Bedrock Edition.

Structure

An abandoned camp consists of a tent and a campsite generated in front of it. The tent variant is determined by the biome in which the camp generates. There are ten variants of the tent per biome, making each tent variation have a weight of 1⁄10 (10%). The campsite variant is selected from a pool of 45 default variants and 4 additional biome-specific variants corresponding to the biome in which the camp generates, with each variant having an equal probability of being chosen. The chance for one to be selected is 1⁄49 (2.04%) for each variant.

As a result, a total of 8,820 unique abandoned camp configurations are possible.

File structure

All abandoned camps structures found below are located in the folder client.jar/data/minecraft/structure/abandoned_camp in Java Edition and data/behavior_packs/vanilla_1.26.50/structures/abandoned_camp in Bedrock Edition.

Reason: Some structure pieces need new renders due to changes made in Bedrock Edition Preview 26.60.21 and Java Edition 26.3 Pre-Release 1 along with the default campsites from a previous snapshot.

  1. ↑ Buried chests that are partially visible from the surface, such as those that can be seen through leaves, are omitted.
  2. ↑ a b Trees and bamboo are procedurally generated after the structure piece is placed. They are included in some renders to represent the final in-game appearance.
  3. ↑ a b c d e f g h Unlike most other structure pieces, the tree in this one is part of the structure itself and does not generate procedurally after the structure piece is placed.
