The End portal block is a block generated when an End portal or exit portal is activated, which teleports the player between the Overworld and the End.

It is one of two blocks that use the starfield effect.

Obtaining

The End portal block cannot be obtained as an item even by using the /give command. The item form is non-existent in Java Edition, but it can be obtained through add-ons, external editors, or by using bugs in Bedrock Edition.

The End portal block can be placed using commands such as /fill or /setblock.

Natural generation

End portal blocks can rarely generate as part of an active End portal in a stronghold, which has a one-in-a-trillion chance of generating with 12 eyes of ender.

Post-generation

When an End portal is activated by putting an eye of ender on each empty End portal frame, the End portal blocks are generated.

The End portal blocks generate in the End podium when the ender dragon is defeated.

Usage

End portal blocks can be used to teleport into and out of the End. When a player or other entity in the Overworld or the End touches an End portal block, it is instantly taken to the other dimension. If a single portal block is placed using commands, it can still be used to travel between dimensions.

All entities traveling to the End appear on the obsidian platform, recreating it if necessary. Players traveling to the Overworld appear at their individual spawn point, while other entities appear at the world spawn point.‌[Java Edition only]

Properties

  • Entities which touch the End portal (who have already seen the credits) are teleported to another dimension:
  • End portal blocks can be destroyed in Creative mode. This does not affect adjacent End portal blocks.
  • The top surface of an End portal is 3⁄4 the height of a full block.
  • The End portal is one of the only blocks without a conventional texture or entity texture; it instead duplicates and layers a star-field pattern that follows the player's cursor.
  • If TNT is detonated on an End portal, no blocks in its blast radius are destroyed.
  • If the End portal block is generated in the block grid using the debug mode world type, it teleports the player to the Overworld regardless of which dimension it is in.
  • In Bedrock Edition, it's impossible to see the texture of the End portal block when the player is under it.

If a player has not seen the credits yet, they are unloaded and shown the credits sequence. Then, they are teleported following the steps above.

Piston interactivity

End portal blocks cannot be pushed by pistons. They also cannot be pushed or pulled by sticky pistons.

Sounds

Generic

End portal blocks use stone-like sounds, unlike nether portal blocks, which use glass sounds. Mojang have stated that this will not be fixed.[1]

Block data

An End portal block has a block entity associated with it that holds additional data about the block.

Java Edition:

  • [NBT Compound / JSON Object] Block entity data
    • Tags common to all block entities see Template:Nbt inherit/blockentity/template

Bedrock Edition:

See Bedrock Edition level format/Block entity format.

History

There is an associated technical blocks page for the internal item form of this block; see Technical blocks/End Portal.

Teaser

October 5, 2011 The End portal block is teased by Notch in a screenshot.

Java Edition

Java Edition
1.0.0Beta 1.9 Prerelease 3 The End portal block is introduced, but is nonfunctional in terms of teleportation.
The End portal block can currently be broken using TNT.
The untinted grass block texture is used on its bottom face, for unknown reasons.
Beta 1.9 Prerelease 4 The end portal now renders two pixels lower than it previously did (12 pixels from the bottom rather than 14). It is unknown if any other visual changes happened to the block in this version.
It now teleports the player into the End.
The End portal block is now TNT immune.
The End portal no longer uses the grass block texture underneath. It is now entirely invisible when viewed from below.
1.3.112w23a The end sky texture has changed, which has subtly changed the appearance of the starfield end portals use.
1.4.212w36a All entities can now travel through End portals.
1.915w49b The hitbox height of the End portal block has been increased from 1⁄16 of a block to 3⁄4 of a block.
End portal blocks now only teleport entities that intersect with its hitbox. Previously it acted like a full block.
The wither and ender dragon can no longer travel through portals, including the End portal.
1.1016w20a The background color has been changed from
 #1A1A1A
to
 #041113
.
1.1116w40a The starfield effect has been changed to match that of the End gateway block. It no longer changes perspective with respect to the player, but now remains static with respect to the game screen.
The animation is sometimes choppy, and on some operating systems may not move at all. This, however, is inconsistent.
1.11.116w50a End portal blocks are now correctly hidden by fog.
1.1317w43a The animation is now much smoother on all operating systems compared to before.
pre3 The particles associated with this block now use the obsidian texture; previously, they used the missing texture.
1.1519w39a This version has an issue where starfields are rendered at the incorrect position or not at all.[2]
19w40a The above bug has been fixed.
19w41a End portals are now completely unaffected by fog.
1.16.220w28a End portals now teleport the player centered on the obsidian platform instead of at the north-west corner of the block.
1.1721w10a The end sky texture is no longer skewed and repeated multiple times in a grid - it is now rendered only once, stretched to fit the screen, and flipped upside-down. In addition, the foreground particles are now larger.
21w11a The foreground particle size change has been reverted, but the background change persists.
21w13a End portals now render on the bottom face.[3]
The wireframe hitbox of the End portal has changed once more, to no longer stretch to the bottom of the block. Whether the actual entity collision box also changed is unknown.
1.2124w21a Added game rule entitiesWithPassengersCanUsePortals, allowing entities with passengers to travel through End portals.[4]
pre1 Removed game rule entitiesWithPassengersCanUsePortals. Entities with passengers can now use End portals by default.
1.21.525w07a On some Windows devices (seemingly those with an AMD graphics processor), the starfield now only moves down, rather than in different directions as it previously did.[5] Devices with an Nvidia processors and those running macOS or Linux appear unchanged from the previous version.
End portals are once again affected by fog.[6]
26.1pre1 End portal blocks will now render when specified as the block ID to use for block display entities, lit TNT entities, when held by endermen and when displayed as a custom block in minecarts. Previously, they would be entirely invisible in these situations.[7]
However, in these situations, the end portal block will render "side faces", so to speak - rather than being a thin plane only visible from above and another thin plane below that only visible from below, viewing one of these entities along the cardinal directions will also permit rectangular sections of starfield to be seen.[8]
Falling block entities representing the end portal are still invisible.[9]
