An infinite lava source, also referred to as a "volcano block" by Notch,[1] was a block that would repeatedly create lava on each of its four orthogonal sides.

Obtaining

Infinite lava sources can be broken instantly, regardless of held items.

Generated loot

Infinite lava sources could be found in starting house chests in stacks of 99 in Indev 0.31 20100124-2310, and stacks of 100 in Indev 0.31 20100128-2200. Prior to this, they were added to the player's inventory by default in a stack of 5.

Usage

As infinite lava sources are full solid cubes, placed gears render on their sides.

The infinite lava source has many visual and functional differences from normal lava:

  • It is a full, solid cube block with full block collision.
  • It does not damage entities.
  • It does not emit light.
  • All sides use the same still lava texture.

Creating liquids

Immediately after placement, the infinite lava source creates blocks of lava on each of its four orthogonal sides. If these created blocks are removed, they get regenerated after enough time.

Sponges

Unlike with normal lava, infinite lava sources are deleted by sponges.

History

Java Edition Indev
0.3120100122-2251 Added infinite lava sources.
The block is referred to as a "volcano block".[1]
It appears in the player's inventory in a stack of 5.
20100124-2310 Infinite lava sources can now be found in starting house chests in a stack of 99.
20100128-2200 Infinite lava sources can now be found in starting house chests in a stack of 100.
20100129-1447 Infinite lava sources can no longer be found in starting house chests.
20100131-2156 Infinite lava sources now periodically generate lava around themselves even if said lava was previously removed.
20100201-2227 Infinite lava sources are now deleted by sponges.
Java Edition Infdev
20100624 The infinite lava source has been removed. As the ID is now empty, it now crashes the game with a NullPointerException if a chunk containing said block is loaded or an inventory containing one opened.
20100629 The numeric ID which infinite lava sources used is now used by oak stairs, and as such all existing infinite lava sources seamlessly convert into oak stairs instead of causing the game to crash.

Issues

"Infinite Lava Source" is a removed block and as such issues relating to it cannot be fixed.
