How to use the ellipse generator

  1. Enter width and length. Width runs left to right on the chart, length top to bottom, each from 1 to 256 blocks. Equal values give a circle.
  2. Outline or filled. Hollow draws the outline with the thickness you set; Filled gives a solid oval for a lawn, a pond or an arena floor.
  3. Count from the centre lines. The red lines cross in the middle of the oval. Hover or tap a block to see its offset from there and how long its row is.
  4. Take it with you. The PNG shows the whole oval with its size and block count; the share link reopens it with the same settings.

How many blocks does an ellipse need?

An oval of 31 × 19 takes 72 blocks as a thin outline and 469 when filled. Because an ellipse is a stretched circle, its outline needs fewer blocks than a circle as wide as its long side (84 for a circle of 31). Every total in the generator is also shown in stacks of 64 and in shulker boxes of 1,728 blocks.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make an oval in Minecraft?
Enter a different width and length. The generator stretches a circle along one axis, so the long sides stay smooth. An odd value puts one block in the middle of that axis, an even value puts the middle between two blocks; you can mix both.
What is the difference between an oval and an ellipse?
In everyday use there is none: an ellipse is the exact oval you get by stretching a circle. Egg shapes, with one end rounder than the other, are ovals too; build them from two half ellipses with the same width and different lengths.
Which proportions look good?
Ratios between about 3:2 and 2:1 read clearly as ovals, for example 31 × 19 or 41 × 21. Close to 1:1 an ellipse looks like a slightly squashed circle; beyond 3:1 it turns into a long, pointed lens.
How do I build an oval arena or racetrack?
Keep Hollow and set the Thickness to the width of the track, for example 4 to 6 blocks. For separate walls, draw an outer oval and an inner one whose width and length are both smaller by twice the track width.
Can I build an oval tower or dome?
The ellipse is a single layer. For an oval tower, repeat the outline on every layer. For round towers and domes, the cylinder and dome generators show every layer with its own block count.
How many blocks does a large oval need?
The counters of the generator show blocks, stacks of 64 and shulker boxes for the current size. The table on this page lists common sizes from 9 × 5 to 101 × 61; a 51 × 31 outline, for example, needs 116 blocks.
