Tameful

(Fabric)

Tame (almost) any animal with a lead. Pets follow you, stay, relax at home, fight for you, carry you, and never die for good: a pet that is downed goes to your stable and comes back when it has recovered.

FEATURES

Taming

  • Put a lead on any animal that isn't hostile (bats too) and choose Yes in the popup. The lead is used up (setting). No just leaves it on the lead.
  • Wolves, cats, horses and other animals you can already tame still tame the vanilla way too.
  • Pandas and turtles can now be put on a lead, so they can be tamed.
  • Baby animals can't be tamed. Wait until they have grown up.
  • If you already have as many pets out as the max_summoned setting allows (default 1), a newly tamed pet goes straight to the stable.
  • Skeleton horses, zombie horses and camel husks can be tamed too, and have the stats of the horse and the camel.
  • Not tameable: happy ghasts, trader llamas (they belong to the wandering trader), and water creatures that die on land (axolotls, nautiluses, fish, squid, dolphins).

New recipes

  • 3 string in a diagonal = 1 lead.
  • Saddles can be made from rabbit hide or wool instead of leather, and with a copper ingot instead of iron (same shape as the vanilla saddle).

Controls

  • Right-click your pet with an empty hand: Follow / Stay. Wolves, cats and parrots really sit; other animals stop in place. On animals that you get on when you right-click (horses, donkeys, mules, camels, saddled pigs and striders), sneak + right-click does it. Llamas can't be ridden by right-click, so for them both a right-click and a sneak + right-click work. Neither opens an inventory (a sneak + right-click on a horse or a right-click on a llama would in vanilla): use the Inventory button in the pet window.
  • Right-click your pet with a stick: open the pet screen.
  • Name tags don't work on pets (see Naming).

The Tameful screen (/tameful)

  • Two sides. Right: Tameful's settings in a scrolling list (only the world owner or an operator can change them; for everyone else they are greyed out). Left: all your pets.
  • Your pets: a scrolling list of every pet you own, whether it is standing next to you, far away, in another dimension or in the stable. Each line shows its name and where it is: "In the world" with its mode, "Away (not nearby)", "In the stable" or "Downed, ready in 12s".
  • At the top: the selected pet's name and numbers (health, mode, attitude, saddle and where it is, or was last seen) with its picture centered under them. A long name wraps instead of being cut off. Under it, the list: pick a pet to see it.
  • Pet window: opens the selected pet's own window without leaving Tameful; Done comes back here. Only for a pet close to you. It is split like this screen: on the left the pet's picture, how it is doing and its six stats; on the right its name, mode, attitude, wander and range, Ride (and Inventory, for animals that have one), Stable (sends it to the stable and closes the window) and Release.
  • Stable: takes the selected pet to the stable. It is saved with its saddle, armor, chest and name and removed from the world. Works from anywhere: if the pet got separated from you (left behind in another dimension or in a chunk that isn't loaded), the stable takes the last saved copy of it and the old one is deleted if it ever loads again.
  • Resummon: brings the selected pet out of the stable, next to you. A downed pet can't be resummoned until it has recovered.
  • Release: asks first (with a warning), then lets the pet go. A pet that is in the stable or far away appears right next to you, as a normal animal.

Naming

  • Pets are named in their pet window (right-click with a stick), up to 32 characters. Name tags don't work on pets: the tag is kept and nothing changes.

The stable

  • Pets that are downed (0 health) go to the stable at once, even from /kill or the void (setting immortal). They recover there for 30 seconds, healing as they wait, and show as "Downed" until then.
  • When you change dimension, your following pets in the dimension you left go to the stable (pets set to Stay or Relax are left alone). Resummon them on the other side. Short jumps in the same dimension (/tp, ender pearls) still bring following pets along.
  • When you log out, your following pets go to the stable and stay there until you resummon them. Pets set to Stay or Relax stay where they are.
  • Pets in the stable still count toward max_tames. If the limit is lowered, nobody loses a pet: you just can't tame more until you are under it.

The pet screen (right-click a pet with a stick)

  • Name: what is written above the pet, each on its own line, under the settings show_name (on by default), show_health and show_owner (both off by default):
    Rex
    ❤ 32/40
    Owner: Steve
A pet you haven't named shows its kind ("Cow"). Turn all three off for no name above pets at all.
  • Mode: Follow, Stay, or Relax (stays around the spot where you chose Relax).
    • Following pets walk after you and teleport next to you when you get 32 blocks away. They come with you when you teleport or throw an ender pearl; when you change dimension they go to the stable instead (see The stable).
    • Relaxing pets just live their normal animal life near home, and are walked back only if they stray. A barn full of them costs about the same as wild animals. They don't look for fights but defend themselves. A relaxing pet that comes out of the stable forgets its home and follows you.
  • Attitude:
    • Passive: never fights.
    • Defensive: fights whoever hurts you or the pet, and whatever you attack.
    • Aggressive: also attacks mobs that are after you or the pet (except creepers).
  • Wander: how far a relaxing pet roams (6 / 12 / 24 blocks).
  • Range: how far an aggressive pet looks for enemies (8 / 16 / 24 blocks).
  • Ride: climb on and ride (see Riding).
  • Inventory: only for animals that have an inventory in vanilla (horses, donkeys, mules, llamas, camels): opens it (saddle, armor, chest).
  • Release: asks first, then turns the pet back into a normal animal. Its saddle and armor go back into your inventory.
  • Status: health, mode and distances.

Riding

  • Every pet can be ridden, with Tameful's own controls: steer with WASD, jump with Space, get off with Shift. Pets climb 1-block steps on their own.
  • Each kind of pet has its own mount speed (see the stats chart below, 4 to 8 blocks/second; walking is 4.3 and sprinting 5.6). Animals that can wear a saddle in Minecraft (horses, donkeys, mules, skeleton and zombie horses, pigs, striders, camels) ride 2 blocks/second faster with one on. They can be ridden without a saddle too, and pigs and striders don't need a carrot on a stick. Other animals can't wear a saddle. A saddle goes back into your inventory if you release the pet.
  • Jumping: every pet jumps with a tap of Space, as high as its mount jump stat (1 or 2 blocks). A horse, donkey, mule or camel wearing a saddle jumps twice as high. There is no jump charge bar and no camel dash.
  • In water, hold Space to swim up.
  • Flying pets (bees, parrots, bats) fly like swimming: look down to dive, look up to climb, and Space rises straight up. They fly for 10 seconds, glide down until they land, then rest for 10 seconds (settings).

Stats

Every kind of pet has the same numbers for every pet of that kind. Pets never wear armor or hold weapons: the sword and chest piece below only name the numbers. Game difficulty does not change them.

  • Mount speed: blocks/second while ridden. +2 with a saddle where one fits.
  • Mount jump: blocks it clears when ridden (Flies = flying pets fly instead).
  • Attack: damage per hit (wood sword 4, stone 5, iron 6, diamond 7, netherite 8).
  • Armor: the armor points of that chest piece (leather 3, chain 5, iron 6, diamond 8, netherite 8). Diamond adds toughness 2, netherite toughness 3 and 10% knockback resistance, which matter against big hits.
  • Health: max health as an adult.
  • Crit: percent chance a hit does double damage (a poison sting is unaffected).

Animals from other mods: speed 8, jump 1, wood sword, leather, 40 health, 5.

Health and movement

  • Every pet walks, wanders, follows and fights at the same speed on land (a wolf's); only mount speeds differ. Vanilla sprints and hurried movements (cats, foxes, camels) are capped to it: wandering or relaxing pets walk calmly (3.5 blocks/second), following and chasing ones run at 7.
  • Every pet keeps up with you: following (or chasing) they run at about 7 blocks/second, faster than a sprinting player (5.6), and one that falls far behind is nudged along and teleports next to you at 32 blocks. Horses stop grazing or rearing, and camels stand up, when you walk off.
  • Pets don't burn in daylight (zombie horses would).
  • Every pet swims instead of sinking.
  • A pet that is hit fights back. It gives up on a target that is more than 14 blocks away or that neither side has hit for 10 seconds.
  • Pets heal 1 health every 2 seconds after 10 seconds out of combat, and in the stable.
  • Pets never die (setting): at 0 health a pet is taken to the stable, downed, instead of dying (see The stable). That includes /kill and the void. With the setting off, pets die like any animal.
  • Pets don't hunt on their own: a pet wolf leaves sheep alone and a fox leaves chickens alone. They only fight through their Attitude.
  • Aggressive pets leave other players' pets alone unless those attack.
  • Wild animals can still hunt pets, except wild cats and ocelots (village cats too), which leave pets alone unless a pet hits them first.
  • Baby animals don't follow a tamed parent around: they ignore adults that are pets (a baby that was following one stops as soon as it is tamed).
  • In water, pets swim at their own pace.
  • Releasing a pet puts its health, speed and hunting back to normal.

Animal by animal

Vanilla abilities keep working on pets: milking, shearing, dyeing, chests on donkeys and mules, eggs, chickens' slow fall, pandas eating bamboo, sniffers digging, parrots imitating mobs, cats' morning gifts, two riders on a camel, and babies growing up. Some animals do more:

  • Armadillos: sometimes curl up for a nap when there's nothing to do, and uncurl when they need to move.
  • Bats: can be tamed, and fight like other pets: they fly at the target and bite, and heal half of the damage they deal. With nothing to do (you standing still, or told to stay or relax) a bat drifts about slowly like a bee (about 2 blocks/second) within 4 blocks of you, coming down to your level instead of staying up where it flew, and now and then flies to a ceiling within 4 blocks (stone, planks, logs, stairs and slabs of village roofs, tree leaves; one it can reach, not a room it is outside of) and hangs there like a wild one; it wakes when hurt, when it has something to fight, or when you walk off. Wild bats stay harmless.
  • Bees: keep their stinger (wild bees die after stinging), and don't pollinate or go into hives, so they stay with you. They fly when ridden.
  • Foxes: still pick things up, and drop what they hold when you come within a block of them.
  • Frogs: as fast as other pets on land (they run, ridden or following; no hopping yet); in water they swim at 8 blocks/second and dive where you look (in water).
  • Rabbits: ridden, they hop along instead of gliding.
  • Goats: ram what they fight (a big shove).
  • Chickens: ridden, they flap and fall slowly, so you land softly.
  • Llamas: spit at what they fight, from up to 10 blocks.
  • Mooshrooms: shear one and the cow it turns into is still your pet.
  • Pandas: can be put on a lead and tamed.
  • Parrots: ride on your shoulder the vanilla way (they hop on when they bump into you while you stand still) and fly off when you jump. They fly when ridden.
  • Turtles: can be put on a lead and tamed. As fast as other pets on land (no more crawling); ridden in water, they swim at 8 blocks/second (faster than their 4 on land) and dive where you look.
  • Striders: don't hop in lava, and aren't slowed down or shivering out of lava, so they keep up with you.
  • Wolves, cats, parrots: really sit when told to stay.

COMMANDS

  • /tameful — Open the Tameful screen: your pets and the settings. (Anyone can open it; only the world owner or operators can change the settings.)

SETTINGS

Change them on the right side of /tameful. Saved in config/tameful.json.

show_name true Write the pet's name (or its kind) above it.
show_health false Write its health above it, on its own line.
show_owner false Write its owner's name above it, on its own line.
flying_pets_get_tired true Flying pets carry you for flight_seconds, glide
down, then rest for flight_rest_seconds. Off: no
                              limit.
immortal true At 0 health a pet goes to the stable, downed, instead
of dying (also from /kill and the void).
regen_health true Pets heal 1 health every 2 seconds after 10
seconds without damage, and in the stable.
max_summoned 1 Most pets out in the world at once (0 = unlimited).
The rest wait in the stable; Resummon is greyed out
until there is room, and a pet tamed over the limit
goes to the stable at once. Stay and Relax pets
count; pets in the stable or far away do not.
max_tames 0 Most pets per player (0 = unlimited). Pets tamed
the vanilla way count too, and so do pets in the
stable. Lowering it never takes pets away, it only
                              stops new taming.
lead_consumed true Taming uses up the lead.
flight_seconds 10 How long flying pets carry you.
flight_rest_seconds 10 How long they rest before flying again.

HQ COMPATIBILITY

With HQ installed, a "Tameful" button in the HQ list opens /tameful, and a mini button (a spawn egg that changes every 5 seconds) shows above your inventory next to HQ's if you have it turned on there. Without HQ the mod works exactly the same.

COMPATIBILITY & NOTES

  • Works with animals from other mods (any animal that isn't hostile).
  • Pets you tamed the vanilla way (wolves, cats, horses...) become full Tameful pets.
  • Works with Conflict Resolution, which can protect pets from other players.
