Big SWEM herds, smooth FPS.
SwemCull makes SWEM horses much lighter for your game.
Your horses look exactly the same. Your game just stops lagging.
Minecraft 1.21.1 (NeoForge) and 1.20.1 (Forge & NeoForge) · only on your side, works on any server · needs SWEM or SWEM Lite
| 32 horses with full tack | Without | With SwemCull ⭐ |
|---|---|---|
| Standing in the herd | 35 FPS | 100 FPS |
| 30 blocks away | 35 FPS | ~1050 FPS |
| 60 blocks away | 35 FPS | ~1400 FPS |
| Behind a wall | 35 FPS | ~2100 FPS |
Minecraft 1.21.1, 1080p, Balanced preset, measured with /swemcull advanced benchmark.
Far away and behind walls you still see every horse with all its tack - it just doesn't cost you FPS. 1.20.1 gets a smaller boost far away.
Pick one with /swemcull preset <name>. Numbers are blocks.
| Preset | Small tack goes | Mane & tail go | Horse goes | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| quality | 48 | never | never | Looks first |
| light | 34 | 50 | 92 | Hard to notice |
| balanced ⭐ | 24 | 36 | 80 | Most players (default) |
| aggressive | 14 | 22 | 56 | Big stables |
| extreme | 6 | 10 | 36 | FPS above everything |
On 1.21.1, far horses that are standing or walking keep all their tack anyway.
/swemcull — shows what's on and how your horses are doing./swemcull preset — pick a preset./swemcull adaptive 60 — keeps you at 60 FPS by itself. /swemcull adaptive off to stop./swemcull overlay — a small box with your FPS and what happens to your horses./swemcull toggle — turns SwemCull off and on right away, so you can compare./swemcull advanced — everything else, one feature at a time.On NeoForge 1.21.1 everything is also in the Mods menu. The settings file is config/swemcull-client.toml.
/swemcull advanced minimappoop on brings it back. You also need: SWEM or SWEM Lite, GeckoLib, and Player Animation Library (SWEM needs it but doesn't say so). On NeoForge 1.20.1, use the Forge version of Player Animation Library - there isn't a NeoForge one, and the Forge one works.
Why does SWEM lag so much?
A SWEM horse is a very detailed model, and every piece of tack has its own texture. A herd of fully tacked horses is more work for your game than most whole builds. SWEM also draws its horses when they're behind you or behind a wall.
How do I get more FPS with SWEM?
Install SwemCull - that's it. The default preset almost triples your FPS in a tacked herd, and far horses cost almost nothing. Need even more? Try /swemcull preset aggressive.
Will my horses look different?
Not up close. On 1.21.1, far horses keep all their tack. Ridden horses, foals, horses with wings, and all horses on 1.20.1 slowly lose small tack and then the mane and tail far away, when they're too small to see anyway - they fade out, they don't pop. Zoom in with a spyglass and everything comes back.
Does the server need it?
No. SwemCull is only on your side and works on any server.
Horses pop in and out as I walk.
Let them stay longer with /swemcull advanced cull 92, or use /swemcull preset light.
A horse appears late when I walk round a corner.
Turn off hiding behind walls with /swemcull advanced occlusion off. Everything else keeps working.
Horses behind me still cost FPS.
They aren't being drawn. What's left is the game moving them around (in singleplayer, the game's own server also runs their AI). SwemCull only changes drawing, on purpose. /swemcull toggle shows it: if your FPS doesn't change, it isn't the drawing.
My Addendum horses are solid black.
That's a missing texture pack. Addendum's breeds come without coat textures - you get them from a community resource pack linked on Addendum's page. /swemcull toggle confirms it: if they stay black with SwemCull off, it isn't SwemCull.
Chat says SwemCull turned something off for my SWEM.
Your SWEM version changed in a way one feature doesn't fit anymore, so that one is off and your horses look the way SWEM draws them. /swemcull shows which one and why. A SwemCull update usually brings it back.
Can I use it in my modpack?
Yes! SwemCull is LGPL-3.0 and modpacks are welcome.
