Turn a dungeon's skeleton or zombie spawner into a compact farm: water carries the mobs to a bubble column, they drop to a kill spot and the drops land in chests.
This design works in Minecraft Java 1.16+.

Tested on the local test server on 26.3, 1.21.11, 1.20.4 and 1.17.1: the farm works on all four. On 1.17.1 and 1.20.4 the skeletons survive the ~23-block drop and the player's hit kills them (experience + bow drops); on 1.21.11 and 26.3 the fall kills them, so there is no experience. Spawner mobs drop their equipment again since 1.21.5 (MC-278683).
~505 Bone/h — Measured on 26.3 (Oct 15, 2026). Measured with our automated test on a local Minecraft server (fake player at the AFK spot); your rate depends on render distance, difficulty and surroundings.

A simple spawner farm for a skeleton or zombie dungeon. Water on the floor of the spawning room pushes every mob into a trench and a bubble column, which lifts them up so they fall about 23 blocks onto a hopper next to the kill room. The drops are collected in two double chests.
It only needs a few cheap blocks and a lot of digging. In our tests on Minecraft 1.17.1 and 1.20.4 the mobs survived the fall with almost no health, so you get the experience by hitting them once; on 1.21.11 and 26.3 the fall itself killed them, so the drops still arrive but without experience.
