Six villagers on beds watch a zombie in a boat, panic and summon iron golems, which water pushes into a small lava pit. Shulkercraft gives about 600 iron per hour (about 500 in our tests) from a 15-minute build, no name tag needed.
This design works in Minecraft Java 1.21+.

Iron golems are summoned by villagers that panic because of a nearby zombie, but only if they slept in a bed during the last Minecraft day – the farm starts after the first night. Each villager group can summon a golem about every 30 seconds.
The villagers stand on beds in mid-air: they do not walk off a drop that high, and at night they sleep in these beds. The golems spawn on the roofs above them (golems may spawn in water) and are carried into the pit.
The zombie in the boat never despawns (mobs in vehicles stay), so no name tag is needed. The farm needs Minecraft 1.21 or newer (Shulkercraft's tested range).
~503 Iron Ingot/h — Measured on 26.3 (Oct 15, 2026). Measured with our automated test on a local Minecraft server (fake player at the AFK spot); your rate depends on render distance, difficulty and surroundings.
This is the only version of this farm so far.

This compact iron farm uses the villagers' panic: when villagers see a zombie and have slept recently, they summon an iron golem nearby. Here the golems appear on two small roofs, water pushes them through open fence gates and they drop into a pit, where their heads touch a strip of lava held up by signs. The iron and poppies flow on water into a row of hoppers and a chest.
The zombie sits in a boat on a bubble column, so it cannot walk away and never despawns. Six villagers stand on their beds on both sides – they can sleep there at night, which golem spawning requires.
