PCA Quiz

Question blocks for Minecraft lessons: students answer a question to get a redstone signal, an item or coins, with hints, question banks and results for the teacher.

PCA Quiz turns any build into a lesson. Place a Question Block, write a multiple-choice or typed-answer question, and choose what a right answer gives: a redstone signal to open a door or start a machine, an item such as a key, or coins with PCA Currency. Students right-click the block to answer, even in adventure mode. A wrong answer shows a hint and a short wait before trying again, and the teacher can see who got it right and how many tries it took.

It was made by Pixel Creators Academy for our teaching servers and works on any Forge 1.20.1 server.

What it's like to use

1. The teacher places a Question Block and right-clicks it. The editor opens: they type "Which gas do plants take in to make their food?", add four choices, click the letter of the right one and add the hint "We breathe it out."
2. On the Reward tab they leave the redstone signal on and put an iron door behind the block.
3. A student walks up and right-clicks. The question appears with the four choices. They pick Oxygen: "Not quite.", the hint, and a 10 second wait. They try again, pick Carbon dioxide: "Correct!", and the door swings open.
4. Afterwards the teacher looks at the block and types /quiz results: "14 of 24 players got it right", with everyone's tries.

Features

Question Blocks

• Multiple choice (2 to 4 choices) or a typed answer with any number of accepted answers. Typed answers aren't fussy: capitals, spaces and a full stop don't matter, and 3.0 counts as 3.
• Hints after a wrong answer, and a wait before trying again, so guessing doesn't pay.
• Rewards: a redstone signal (powers the blocks around it, like a button), any item (a PCA Puzzle key, diamonds...), coins with PCA Currency, and your own message.
• Once per player (or every time): students can't farm the reward, but the redstone still works for them again.
• Results: each block remembers who answered, how many tries they took and whether they got it right.
• Works in adventure mode, and copies keep their question (Ctrl + middle-click, or save a room with a structure block).
• The right answers never leave the server, so students can't read them from their game.

Question banks

• Keep questions in banks, simple files in config/pcaquiz/banks/, or build them in game with a block's Save + add to bank button.
• A block can ask a random question from a bank. Each student keeps their question until they get it right, so they can't keep clicking for an easier one.
• /quiz ask @a year7_maths pops a question up for the whole class, and the teacher is told who gets it right.
• An example bank comes with the mod.

Every answer is written to the server log.

Quiz doors in PCA Puzzle

With the PCA Quiz Puzzle connector, any PCA Puzzle door can be a quiz door that opens when a student answers a question. It works with any room.

For other mods

QuizApi lets other mods ask a question and do something when it's answered correctly.

Requirements and dependencies

No other mods are required.

• Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge 47 or newer
• Install on the server and in players' games (it adds a block and the question screen).

Permissions: pcaquiz.edit (setting up question blocks: ops and creative players by default) and pcaquiz.manage (/quiz: ops by default).

Standalone

PCA Quiz doesn't need the Pixel Creators Academy server or any PCA service. It works on any Forge 1.20.1 server, with or without the other PCA mods.

Getting started

1. Install PCA Quiz on the server and in everyone's game.
2. In creative, take a Question Block from the Redstone Blocks tab, place it and right-click it to write your question.
3. Put your own questions in config/pcaquiz/banks/ (copy default.json), or build them in game with Save + add to bank.
4. The wait after a wrong answer is set in config/pcaquiz-common.toml.
