Torches in Glass is the safest way to place torches.  They don't start or spread fires and can quickly be removed or replaced.

 

You can trim the torches in the following:

  • Clear (glass)
  • Oak
  • Dark Oak
  • Acacia
  • Jungle
  • Crimson
  • Warped
  • Mangrove
  • Netherrack
  • Obsidian
  • Spruce 
  • Stone

 

And in 1.19.4:

  • Cherry
  • Bamboo
