The guns are not just guns from reality copied to Minecraft.The guns in the mod have different uses, which will not necessarily help you in combat, but rather in everyday activities.
In Mod, there's a gun that can get you teleport from place to place, like Ender Pearl just more powerful and fast, and maybe even more accurate. There are also Portal Guns, two guns that can create gates to other worlds (the End and the Nether).
There is the diamond gun, which can kill the wither in two blows, and with two nether stars you can create the strongest shotgun in the game: The Death Gun.
