Nuclear Winter is a Minecraft Forge 1.12.2 survival mod that transforms the world into the aftermath of a nuclear disaster.
A nuclear explosion strikes somewhere in the world between Day 1 and Day 3, triggering a progressive environmental catastrophe. From that moment on, radiation spreads, wildlife begins to mutate, food becomes contaminated, and the world gradually becomes more dangerous.
The disaster progresses through six stages, with each stage introducing increasingly severe consequences.
Your objective is simple:
Survive the Nuclear Winter.
The nuclear event happens automatically during the first days of the world.
The explosion occurs at a randomly selected location approximately 400 blocks away from a player.
The exact explosion day is randomly selected between:
Day 1
Day 2
Day 3
Once the explosion happens, Stage 1 begins immediately.
The event is synchronized through the world's saved data, meaning the disaster is a world-wide event rather than a separate event for every player.
In multiplayer, the disaster is triggered only once for the world.
The Nuclear Winter progresses according to the Minecraft day.
Explosion → Day 4
The nuclear disaster has begun.
Radiation starts affecting the environment and animals begin being classified according to their resistance to the disaster.
At this stage, most animals remain normal, but some can already become protected or mutate.
Animal distribution:
70% — Normal / vulnerable
25% — Radiation-resistant / protected
5% — Mutant
Day 5 → Day 6
The effects of the disaster become more pronounced.
Animal distribution:
50% — Normal / vulnerable
35% — Protected
15% — Mutant
Day 7 → Day 8
Radiation continues to spread and mutations become considerably more common.
Animal distribution:
35% — Normal / vulnerable
40% — Protected
25% — Mutant
Day 9 → Day 10
The world becomes significantly more dangerous.
Mutated wildlife is now common.
Animal distribution:
20% — Normal / vulnerable
30% — Protected
50% — Mutant
Day 11 → Day 12
The ecosystem is close to collapse.
Most animals that appear are now mutants.
Animal distribution:
5% — Normal / vulnerable
10% — Protected
85% — Mutant
Mutants at this stage also receive additional combat strength.
Day 13 onward
The final stage of the Nuclear Winter.
At this point, normal animal spawning is completely suppressed.
The world has reached the final stage of the disaster, accompanied by its own atmospheric music.
Stage 6 represents the collapse of the original ecosystem.
Radiation is one of the main survival mechanics of Nuclear Winter.
The world is divided into radiation zones based on distance from the nuclear disaster.
The radiation system uses multiple levels of contamination, with the most dangerous areas reaching Level 6.
Radiation affects vulnerable living creatures and can cause severe consequences as exposure increases.
The highest radiation level is reserved for the most extreme areas of the disaster.
The radiation system includes:
Level 0 — No radiation
Levels 1–5 — Increasing contamination
Level 6 — Extreme radiation
Radiation can affect animals differently depending on their classification.
Animals exposed to the Nuclear Winter can become mutants.
Currently supported mutant animals include:
🐄 Cows
🐖 Pigs
🐑 Sheep
🐔 Chickens
🐇 Rabbits
🐎 Horses
Mutations are determined when animals are classified by the Nuclear Winter system.
The probability of mutation increases dramatically as the disaster progresses.
Mutants aren't simply stronger versions of normal animals.
They have completely different behavior.
Mutants can detect nearby players from up to 64 blocks away.
When they detect a player, they turn toward them and begin following them.
Mutants move significantly faster than normal animals, with movement comparable to a baby zombie.
They can also jump when an obstacle blocks their movement.
The mutant's attack timer only begins when the player gets within 10 blocks.
Once the timer has started, moving away does not immediately reset the timer as long as the player remains within the mutant's 64-block detection range.
The mutant continues tracking the player.
After approximately 25 seconds (500 ticks) of tracking, the mutant becomes aggressive and begins attacking.
When the attack begins, the mutant plays one of several random mutant sounds.
Three different mutant sounds are currently available:
Mutant Sound 1
Mutant Sound 2
Mutant Sound 3
Mutants have approximately 3× the normal maximum health of their original animal.
This applies dynamically to the animal's original health value.
Nuclear Winter also includes dedicated mutant spawn eggs.
Available eggs:
Mutant Cow Egg
Mutant Pig Egg
Mutant Sheep Egg
Mutant Chicken Egg
Mutant Rabbit Egg
Mutant Horse Egg
These eggs allow mutants to be spawned manually for testing or creative gameplay.
Animals affected by the disaster can provide contaminated food.
The mod adds:
🥩 Contaminated Meat
Contaminated Meat is edible, but consuming it comes with a serious risk.
Eating it applies Poison for approximately 9 seconds.
It is therefore not a safe replacement for normal food.
To survive high-radiation environments, Nuclear Winter introduces a complete Hazmat Suit.
The suit consists of:
Hazmat Helmet
Hazmat Chestplate
Hazmat Pants
Hazmat Boots
The armor has a distinctive yellow appearance and uses the Minecraft leather armor model.
Wearing the complete four-piece Hazmat Suit reduces the effective radiation level by 4 levels.
For example:
Radiation Level 5 → Effective Level 1
Radiation Level 6 → Effective Level 2
The protection applies only when the complete suit is equipped.
The Hazmat Suit also protects the player from radiation-related nausea at survivable radiation levels.
The suit is crafted using Iron Blocks.
Each armor piece requires Iron Blocks, making the Hazmat Suit an expensive but powerful late-survival resource.
Animals are classified by the Nuclear Winter system when they enter an affected world.
Animals can become:
Normal animals that are susceptible to radiation effects.
Animals that are resistant to the radiation system and can survive contamination that would normally affect vulnerable animals.
Animals that have undergone mutation and become hostile predators.
The classification system prevents animals from being repeatedly reclassified every tick.
The Nuclear Winter is designed around progressive deterioration.
The world does not immediately become completely hostile.
Instead:
Normal world → Radiation → Mutations → Increasing mutant population → Ecosystem collapse
This creates a survival progression where the player has time to prepare before the final stages.
The mod includes dedicated sound effects for the nuclear disaster and its aftermath.
Features include:
Nuclear alarm
Nuclear explosion sounds
Geiger counter radiation sounds
Multiple mutant sounds
Stage 6 atmospheric music
The Geiger counter reacts to the player's radiation level, providing an audio indication of increasing radiation danger.
The Stage 6 soundtrack is designed specifically for the final phase of the Nuclear Winter and loops continuously while the world remains in Stage 6.
Radiation levels are accompanied by different Geiger counter sounds.
As radiation increases, the sound changes to reflect the danger level.
The highest radiation stages use dedicated radiation audio effects.
This allows players to recognize dangerous radiation even without constantly checking their surroundings.
Nuclear Winter was designed with multiplayer worlds in mind.
The nuclear event is stored as world data, meaning the disaster is shared by the entire world.
The explosion is triggered only once.
All players subsequently experience the same Nuclear Winter progression:
Explosion → Stage 1 → Stage 2 → Stage 3 → Stage 4 → Stage 5 → Stage 6
The mod includes functionality intended to make development and testing easier.
For testing the Nuclear Winter progression, you can use Minecraft's vanilla time command to advance the world:
/time set day
You can also use:
/time add 24000
to advance approximately one Minecraft day.
/nuclearwinter setday [day]
to advance nuclear calender day.
/nuclearwinter test [explosiondistance]
to test explosion in creative.
This allows you to quickly test:
Nuclear event timing
Stage progression
Radiation
Animal mutations
Mutant behavior
Hazmat protection
Stage 6
Stage 6 music
Developer/test commands specific to Nuclear Winter will be listed here once confirmed from the current build.
| Minecraft Day | Event |
|---|---|
| Day 1–3 | ☢️ Nuclear explosion |
| Immediately after explosion | ❄️ Stage 1 |
| Day 5 | ☢️ Stage 2 |
| Day 7 | ☢️ Stage 3 |
| Day 9 | 🧬 Stage 4 |
| Day 11 | 👹 Stage 5 |
| Day 13 | ☠️ Stage 6 |
The explosion itself is randomized between Days 1 and 3, while the later stages follow the fixed timeline.
Prepare before the explosion.
Once the Nuclear Winter begins:
Keep food supplies.
Avoid highly contaminated areas.
Watch your radiation exposure.
Craft a Hazmat Suit before entering dangerous zones.
Be careful around animals — not every animal is harmless anymore.
Remember that mutants can detect you from a considerable distance.
Don't let mutants stalk you for too long.
By Stage 5, expect the majority of wildlife to be mutated.
By Stage 6, the original animal ecosystem is gone.
The longer you survive, the more hostile the world becomes.
The world was never meant to survive a nuclear disaster.
The explosion is only the beginning.
Radiation spreads.
Animals mutate.
Food becomes contaminated.
The ecosystem collapses.
And eventually, the Nuclear Winter takes everything.
How long can you survive?
