JCSMP Pops

JCSMP Pops is a Minecraft Java 1.21.1 NeoForge mod that introduces collectible figures of the Just Create SMP server members. When released from their boxes, these figures come to life as Tamagotchi-style entities. They require care, attention, and management, possessing distinct needs, moods, and evolving temperaments based on player interactions.

POPs in Boxes originally designed and made by Azu_. All works in this mod are derivative of the original concept by Azu_

Core Mechanics: Needs and Survival

Pops are living entities that require regular maintenance to stay healthy and happy. To prevent unfair offline penalties, their internal timers only tick when they are within 32 blocks of a player.

Hunger and Energy

  • Hunger: Decreases over time. Pops will actively seek out food (from chests, barrels, or cake blocks) if they are hungry. Starvation will result in the entity's death.
  • Energy: Depletes continuously. If energy reaches zero, the Pop will collapse and sleep. Low health also caps maximum energy.
  • Eating: Pops eat food items given to them or that they can find. Feeding must be monitored; overfeeding will cause the entity to be sick.

Sleep Mechanics Pops must sleep to restore energy. Players can wake a sleeping Pop by interacting with an empty hand. Sleep quality directly impacts the Pop's mood upon waking.

Sleep Location Energy Restoration
Bed Fastest
Seat Slower
Canvas Rug Slow
Floor Slowest

Psychology: Temperament and Mood

Each Pop spawns with a randomized baseline bias toward being Playful, Helpful, Happy, or Frustrated. This bias dictates their default reactions to environmental factors.

Long-Term Temperament A Pop's overarching personality develops on a spectrum from Nasty to Kind. This is calculated through a lifetime interaction percentage. Pops properly cared for (fed, rested, appeased) become Kind, making them more likely to offer gifts. Neglected and badly treated Pops become Nasty, increasing the likelihood of destructive behavior.

Mood States and Appeasement Moods shift dynamically based on their current needs and surroundings. An overtired Pop will escalate from exhausted to angry.

  • Crying (Frustrated): Can be appeased by providing their favorite toy, favorite food, or picking them up using the Carry On mod.
  • Requires "Uppies" (Clingy/Frustrated): Demands to be held. Appeased by carrying them for a set duration.
  • Tantrums (Angry): Will lay face down on the floor, refuse to eat, and drop all held items.

Social Interactions and Favour

Pops remember how specific players treat them and maintain individualized favour ratings.

Favour System

  • Gaining Favour: Feeding preferred foods, playing, and fulfilling requests (like picking them up).
  • Losing Favour: Harming the Pop, feeding them disliked foods, or ignoring their requests.
  • Reactions: Pops will actively hide from players they dislike, run toward their preferred owners, or even attack players they hate. They also form "Best Friend" bonds with other Pop entities.

Favorites Every Pop is generated with a hidden favorite food and favorite item. These preferences remain hidden from the tool-tip until the player discovers them through trial and error.

Inventory Management

Pops possess a distinct inventory system to hold items they collect or are given.

  • Capacity: Maximum of 8 slots.
  • Restrictions: Each slot holds a single item type; stacks are not permitted.
  • Visibility: A Pop will normally hold at least one of its inventory items in its main hand.
  • Emptying: Interacting with a Pop using a Bundle will instantly extract all items from its inventory.

Dynamic Behaviors and Actions

Pops will interact with the world around them based on their current mood.

Helpful Actions

  • Copies player actions, including mining or placing blocks if provided the correct tools or block types.
  • Activates nearby buttons or levers.
  • Utilizes mod-specific wrenches to rotate blocks if the player is holding a wrench.

Playful Actions

  • Chases and rides passive mobs.
  • Gathers and throws snowballs.
  • Bounces on beds and dances to music.
  • Picks flowers to bring to players.
  • Gather and plant crops.
  • Play on sand blocks.

Bored or Wild Actions

  • Rapidly opens and closes doors, trapdoors, chests, and barrels.
  • Steals items from item frames, armor stands, and open chests.
  • Throws items around and randomly punches blocks or entities.

Health, Dismemberment, and Repair

Pops are fragile and can sustain physical damage. Excessive damage results in limb dismemberment, progressively limiting their capabilities. There is a chance that a Pop can lose a random limb when taking damage. Losing limbs effects how the Pop can interact with the world.

Dismemberment

  • One arm lost: Minimal impact.
  • Both arms lost: Incapable of eating, giving items, or utilizing tools.
  • One leg lost: Forced to hop.
  • Second leg lost: Immobilized.

Repair

  • Repairing Limbs: Players must craft replacement Pop appendages. Limbs are reattached by holding Super Glue in the off-hand and the replacement limb in the main hand.

Death

  • Revival: Pops are rare entities. If a Pop "dies" (from starvation or excessive damage), it is not permanently deleted. It can be revived using a Nether Star.

Utility Roles

Pops can be assigned static roles within a world, such as shopkeepers or train drivers. Placing a Pop, via the Carry On mod, on a specific seat block will force it to remain seated indefinitely, overriding standard tamagotchi behaviors.

Pop Diaries

To get more information about a pop, click a pop with a written book and all of it's data and stats will be written into the book for the player to read. These diaries can be updated clicking a link within the book when close to the Pop it was written for, or by clicking the Pop with the book again.

Put them back in a box

Empty Pop Boxes can be crafted. Interacting with a pop while holding an empty Pop Box will put the Pop back in it's box where it's data and states will be remembered. While in the box, they will not tick and their data will remain static.
