FF Soil Fertility
Not all dirt is created equal! Rich patches of land make your crops grow faster while low quality soil dampens growth and bonemeal. Gives a real gameplay reason to choose where to establish your farmland.
How it works
- The land is split into smooth patches of Low, Normal and High quality soil. Most of the world is Normal, so only some spots stand out.
- Crops grow slower on Low soil and faster on High soil. Saplings can optionally be affected too (off by default, works with modded saplings). Crop and sapling growth changes can each be turned off in the config. Normal soil behaves exactly like vanilla unless you change its growth speed or bone meal limit in the config.
- Bone meal struggles on Low soil: each use only grows a crop by one stage instead of several.
- Grass is more saturated on High soil and more washed out on Low soil, so you can scout a good farm spot just by looking.
- Hold any hoe and look at the ground to read its soil quality as coloured text above the action bar.
- Growing crops release particles that show their soil: sparkles on High soil, smoke on Low soil (Normal has none unless you turn them on).
- Soil quality depends only on where you are (and the local biome climate), not on the block under the crop, so it is the same for every crop in a patch.
- Optionally, warm, wet biomes tend towards richer soil and extreme deserts or frozen lands towards poorer soil. Temperature and rainfall are each a separate switch, both off by default; this uses each biome's climate, so modded biomes work too.
- The pattern comes from the world seed, so every world has its own layout.
Configuration
You can adjust:
- How big the soil patches are
- How much of the world is Low and High quality
- How much slower or faster crops grow on Low, Normal and High soil
- How many growth stages one use of bone meal can give on each soil type, or no limit
- Whether modded crops are affected as well
- Whether temperature and rainfall (any biome, modded ones included) make soil richer or poorer (each off by default), and how much
- Whether grass is tinted at all, and how strongly (saturation, hue and brightness separately for Low and High soil)
- Which particles show when crops grow on each soil type, or none
- Whether the hoe soil readout is shown
Mod compatibility
FF Soil Fertility affects any modded crop that grows like a vanilla crop. The grass tint replaces the grass colour of vanilla grass, short grass and ferns, so other mods that recolour those same blocks may fight over it.
Version differences
FF Soil Fertility works the same on every supported version and loader.
For datapack makers
A block tag lists which blocks are affected by soil quality, so datapacks can add or remove plants. Click the Wiki link in the sidebar and open the Datapacks page for details.
For mod developers
FF Soil Fertility doesn't have a modding API.
What's with the FF prefix?
It stands for Fyxe's Features! It's a clean way to easily find all of my mods when changing configs or creating packs. Mods that are a part of the "FF" system are usually smaller and unintrusive.
