BetterSpear is a combat-focused mod that fully rebuilds Minecraft’s new spear weapon and brings an improved version of it to Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge.
Mojang recently added the spear to vanilla Minecraft, but the weapon was very limited: simple damage scaling, a basic charge attack, and lunge enchantment.
This mod takes that core concept and turns it into a deeper, more flexible, more powerful, and more cinematic combat tool, designed for players who want true spear gameplay on 1.20.1.
BetterSpear introduces every spear tier to survival progression:
Wooden
Stone
Iron
Gold
Diamond
Netherite
Each tier has unique damage, reach, durability and combat feel.
Spear hits reach up to 3.5 blocks with normal attacks.
This gives mid–range melee combat new skill expression, spacing, and timing.
Hold right-click to enter charge mode and strike within 3 blocks.
Charge attacks include:
stronger damage potential
cinematic hit particles
smoother timing
and immediate cancel on left-click
From Mojang’s original concept, now redesigned and expanded:
perform a forward dash
higher levels increase distance
uses hunger depending on the level
A unique enchantment exclusive to this mod:
If the spear is charged and you are moving at high speed
(horse riding, Elytra flight, creative flight…),
you can smash into blocks and destroy structures!
Important:
Every destroyed block consumes durability, so use carefully.
Recommended for Diamond and Netherite spears only.
Spear combat has new visual polish:
impact particles
charge effects
improved hit animations
sword-style sweep visuals for spear strikes
BetterSpear:
rebuilds the spear in a community–driven way
creates new combat depth
adds spear gameplay to players who cannot play 1.21+
enhances PvE, PvP, boss fights and world exploration
brings more skill expression to melee combat
Spend some time learning timing and spacing, and the spear becomes a powerful and versatile weapon.
BetterSpear is in early development and will continue to evolve with feedback.
When a player uses a spear in first-person view, the spear animation may appear to overlap with spears of the same type in their own hands.
Example: Player A holds a Wooden Spear and attacks.
If other players also have Wooden Spears, Player A sees the animation appear “over” their own spear.
Important: This only affects the first-person view of the player using the spear.
Other players do not see the animation at all; the effect is purely visual for the local player.
This issue is caused by the animation plugin, and currently there is no known fix.
If you hold two spears at the same time (main-hand + off-hand) and charge,
damage will stack and become double.
This bug is known.
It may remain or be removed depending on community response.
Feedback is extremely helpful, so every suggestion counts.
