To start, you will need to craft an oil rig. Give it a battery or redstone dusts, and it will start to find oil for you. Caution: the machine will cause "air pollution"! The machine will produce a bucket of crude oil when it's done.
You can refine the crude oil with a furnace. The refined oil can be used directly as fuel, or crafted into a large canister of oil for more recipes.
Refined canisters are a crucial material needed to make Handheld Instant Fermenters, which can help you make alcohol-related things.
To make plastic blocks, "brew" a canister of refined oil on a brewing stand, but with a bucket instead of a water bottle at the bottom.
